What A Life – Hans Gál’s Music Behind Barbed Wire
(Working Title)

A film by Stephan Herzog
approx. 52 min, TV/VOD
Production status: in early development, looking for co-producers and broadcasters

Imprisoned as an “enemy alien” in wartime Britain, Austrian-Jewish composer Hans Gál transformed his suffering into music. In his witty yet deeply tragic camp revue What A Life?!, he captured the absurdity of life in the Huyton internment camp. The film weaves together musical performances, interviews with his daughter, and a dramatized reading of Gál’s diary to shed light on one of the lesser-known stories of the Second World War.
